Hi Sandy,

Oils don't treat most cotton-based surfaces kindly. So as with canvas, where you'd perhaps use lots of gesso to create a barrier so the oils don't rot the canvas, so you need to treat paper. You can use rabbit-skin glue (traditionally) or PVA size for this purpose, or Acrylic matte medium. I used PVA--a single coat creates an archival barrier between the paper and the oil.
